What is the cause of Cleft Lip and/or Palate? Who suffer from it?
Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is among the most common congenital anomalies. Being in form of unilateral or bilateral, cleft lip disorder can be seen alone or together with cleft palate. Although the etiological factors that cause CLP are not fully known, multiple factors are in question. It is known that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in cleft lip with or without cleft palate and isolated cleft palate. ⠀
Malnutrition, exposure to radiation, smoking, alcohol and drug use, stress, deficiency or excessive intake of vitamin A, folic acid deficiency and certain diseases such as diabetes can cause this. ⠀
It is known that giving birth at old age, and high age difference between the mother and father affect the occurrence of DDY, and marriages with close relatives, which are common in our country, are also reported to increase the probability of familial transmission.
